  Door Manu Claeys, bestuurslid bij Morpho vzw en voorzitter van stRaten-generaal De Vlaamse Regering overweegt om het M HKA (Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen) zijn statuut als museum te ontnemen. Daarmee dreigt niet enkel een instelling te verdwijnen, maar ook een artistiek ecosysteem dat decennialang heeft bijgedragen aan de internationale uitstraling van Vlaanderen. Vanuit het veld klinkt toenemende bezorgdheid: Wat betekent het precies als een museum zijn statuut verliest? En wie wint of verliest daarbij? Manu Claeys formuleerde 15 (+1) scherpe vragen die politici, beleidsmakers en cultuurliefhebbers niet mogen negeren. Zijn oproep is helder: vooraleer men een museum opdoekt, moet er eerst verantwoording komen.

  In de buurt leeft de vrees dat er dure appartementen zullen komen op de plek waar vroeger het Hof van Beroep zat op het Antwerpse Zuid. Maar volgens schepen voor stadsontwikkeling Patrick Janssens is dat nog lang niet beslist. Oorspronkelijk zou op die plek het nieuwe M HKA verrijzen, maar Vlaams minister van Cultuur Caroline Gennez schrapte die plannen vorige week. Wat er wél met de site zal gebeuren, blijft voorlopig onduidelijk.

  Kunstenaars zijn zaterdag in het M HKA op de foto gegaan met een zelf gekozen kunstwerk uit de collectie van het museum. Op die manier willen de kunstenaars zich solidair tonen met het M HKA, waarvan de directie maandag te horen kreeg dat het wordt afgebouwd tot een kunstencentrum.

  The Flemish government has announced that it will close the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA) and absorb its collection into a new contemporary art museum in Ghent. The move is part of a major reorganisation of Flemish museums, with S.M.A.K in Ghent– where the M HKA collection will be moved – becoming the new Flemish Museum of Contemporary and Current Art. The M HKA space is to be turned into a centre for exhibitions, studios, workshops and residences. The Art Newspaper reports that the decision has been criticised by the Belgian arts community: Dieter Roelstraete, a former curator at M HKA, called the move ‘ludicrous, short-sighted, and all too obviously politically motivated in ways we thought we had long outgrown’. Last week, Flemish culture minister Caroline Gennez announced the cancellation of M HKA’s planned new building – a €130m project that has been in the works for the past decade – but said that this would not affect employees. Director of the museum, Bart De Baere, said that M HKA was not made aware of the merger before the announcement.
